“Why get adjusted weekly? There’s nothing wrong with me.” Dr. Haley and I (Dr. Tina) hear this all the time, both in and out of the office. And we agree! There is, in fact, nothing wrong with you. And, we believe in the limitations of matter (matter, in this case, being your physical body), which then limits the innate intelligence that resides within your body. Let me back up and explain.

Chiropractic heavily relies on the 33 principles on which it was founded and developed. The first is called The Major Premise, which states “A Universal Intelligence is in all matter and continually gives to it all its properties and actions, thus maintaining it in existence.” This book was written in 1927 so a simpler way to say that is “That which designed and created us is within us, governing and sustaining us.” This also reminds me of Genesis 2:7, “Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.” So, if our Creator lives within us, sustaining us, then WHY do I need to get adjusted? We’re getting there.

Skipping ahead to Principle 12, Interference with Transmission of Universal Forces, “There can be interference with transmission of universal forces.” Do you remember your very first visit to Evergreen? You may have heard Dr. Haley or I talk about the brain to body connection, in which we explain that when the brain and the body are well connected and communicating properly, we call that 100% or normal. But when there is interference in the brain to body connection (i.e., the nervous system), that communication between the brain and body is not 100%. You can think of this like a dimmer switch for those signals between the two; the signals are going to get where they’re being directed, but they won’t be as bright or as loud as they normally would be without that interference. You may also hear us refer to this as a subluxation.

Subluxation is addressed in Principle 31 Subluxation as “Interference with transmission in the body is always directly or indirectly due to subluxations in the spinal column.” Subluxation is further defined as “..the condition of a vertebra (a single bone in your spine) that has lost its proper juxtaposition (moved “out of place”) with the one above or the one below, or both; to an extent less than a luxation (dislocation); which impinges nerves and interferes with the transmission of mental impulses.” It’s important to note that this movement “out of place” is no more than millimeters. When it comes to your nervous system, it only takes the weight of a dime, about 2.2 grams, to cause interference with transmission of signals from brain to body. A study performed in the 1970s confirmed that just 10mmHg (the pressure of holding a dime in your hand) can cause 40-60% decrease in electrical transmission down the course of a nerve. So when your spine subluxates mere millimeters, the brightness of your signals in the area affected by that vertebra goes down by about half! If the lights went down by half in my house suddenly, I would definitely have to squint to see. Which brings me to my next point, adaptation.

So now you know what a subluxation is and what it causes, but why and how do we get subluxations in the first place? We can sum this all up in one word; adaptation. Or rather, the lack there of. When we find ourselves subluxated, it is because of one of the Three T’s: Thoughts, Traumas, and Toxins. Or, our Emotional, Physical, and Chemical stressors. These stressors in life cannot be avoided, and there are good and bad ones. For example, a physical stressor that is bad may be sitting at a desk for 8 hours a day, while a physical stressor that is good may be a really tough workout that leaves you very sore the next day. Both are unavoidable, to a certain extent; you may have no choice but to sit at your desk all day to work, and exercise, while sometimes difficult, is necessary to keep our bodies in excellent working condition. It’s easy to see why either of these stressors may cause one of those subluxations we’ve been chatting so much about. Your body had a stressor (sitting), it tried to adapt (creating a new posture pattern), it failed (subluxation), and now your signals are about half as bright as they normally would be. Depending on where the subluxation is, this can lead to a lack of mental clarity, decreased digestion efficiency, or even pain. And while we do often hear that these things are “normal” when working at a desk all day, at Evergreen we like to say that they are not normal, they are common. If something is normal then it is functioning at 100% and communicating well, remember?

So then, we finally come to WHY get adjusted. When we get adjusted, subluxation is removed as bones can be moved those millimeters they were out of place, back into place. This takes the weight off of the nerves, and allows for signals to travel down the nerve at full force or “brightness.” When subluxation is removed, and the brain and body communicate at 100%, we function at 100%, and live life to our fullest potential. Dr. Haley and I will always recommend that you get adjusted weekly for this reason; if subluxation can decrease nerve transmission by half or even more, we want to remove that interference as soon as possible to get you back to that 100%. We believe in the power of the nervous system governed by the life breathed into us, and we believe you deserve to live your life at your fullest potential.

P.S. I (Dr. Tina), spent 3.5 years dissecting the book most of this information is found in at 6 a.m. on Friday with my friends in coffee shops..I would love to discuss this further with you if you’re interested :) You can email me at drtina@evergreenchirokc.com.
